The Dorchester County Department of Social Services will be hosting an Easter Party for Foster Parents and Foster Children throughout the county on April 22nd, and they need 50 Easter baskets to give out to these families. If you would like to donate an Easter basket or would like to know more about how you can help out with this event, please contact either HALOS/DSS Liaison Michael Baller at 371-0171 or michael.baller@dss.sc.gov or Foster Care Supervisor Ann Edwards at 821-0444 x3017 or ann.edwards@dss.sc.gov.

Starting February 19th, the Lowcountry Biblical Counseling Center will begin offering courses on issues we face today like ADHD, Self-image, Child Abuse, Biblical Decision Making, Codependency, Suicide, Bipolar, Stress and Burn-out, Excuse Making, and Crisis Counseling.

The Bible has answers for every problem we encounter in life. Come see what difference God’s Truth has on meeting our need for hope and change!

Low Country Orphan Relief is building

I am reaching out to each of you to inform you of our exciting new venture in 2011.

There is a desperate need for Lowcountry Orphan Relief to expand and to become more available to the abused, abandoned and neglected children of the tri- county area. Therefore, I am requesting your help to bring this exciting new project online by March 31, 2011.

We have received permission to build a 4,000 square foot distribution center in our own backyard. This building will enable our organization to provide the needs of deserving children in a more timely and efficient manner.

In addition to clothing thousands of children each year, LOR has now partnered with the county school districts and set up mini "Just In Case" clothing closets in many low-income schools. We are in desperate need of more space to store all the items that need to be distributed to these schools along with all the other agencies and counties we serve. This new program is beneficial to children who do not have clothing adequate to attend school. The program ensures that all children in these schools have the basic necessities to get them through the school day feeling clean and presentable.

The cost of this building bas been estimated to be $200,000. We would like to proceed with construction by the middle of February. We have a wonderful retired architect who has generously volunteered his services free of charge to get us started. However, craftsmen (pro bono), funding, and in-kind gifts are needed to provide the following:

a) Construction Engineer
b) Plumber
c) Electrician
d) Roofer
e) Door & Window Contractor
f) Flooring Contractor
g) Lighting
h) Interior Contactor (Shelving and Design, etc.)
i) Painter
j) Heating/Air
k) Building Supplies
l) Financial Support- of course!

Please reach out to your friends, family or anyone you might know who could donate funds or in-kind gifts to meet these requirements. In addition, please consider making a generous donation yourself of money or in-kind services to raise up this expansion of our ministry.

I have been learning recently about Charleston HALOS (Helping and Lending Outreach Support) who helps abused and neglected children in crisis by partnering with faith-based and community organizations.

Here's one way you can help today:

Below are a list of requests (not holiday related) from Dorchester County Caseworkers

-2 Twin Beds

-2 Bunk-beds

-1 Request for any size bed

-1 Request for a microwave or a stove

- Curtains and Kitchen Utensils for one family

-2 Requests for any items (household items, furniture, beds, clothing, jackets etc.) for two families with virtually nothing.

-3 Portable Space Heaters

-We also have one special request for a canopy bed for a Dorchester County child, Tyedasha, who has a rare brain disorder called Aicardi Syndrome. She also has seizures which present a safety issue for her in her current metal crib. According to the foster parent, Tyedasha is bumping her head on her crib at night when she has seizures. Medicaid will not pay for the canopy bed that she has been prescribed to protect her head during seizures; the cost of this bed is approximately $12,000. HALOS cannot afford to buy this bed for this child, but I thought that I would let you know about this need in case there is a possibility that one of your organizations may be able to help.

I'm reading Alan and Debbie Hirsch's book Untamed right now. This is the second book of Alan's that I've read/am reading and I'm learning a lot about how the early church grew and functioned. How different from how we do it today!

So I'm pointing you to one of his network of websites that should help you see some of what I'm learning these days. There's a lot here!

The Forgotten Ways--the books as well as this site--is dedicated rediscovering and reactivating the most potent form of missional church--the exponential Jesus movement. The Forgotten Ways is in effect a typology, or more technically a phenomenology, of movement. The model proposed (called Apostolic Genius) describes the factors that must come together to both catalyze as well as maintain exponential multiplication movements. Apostolic Genius is a "latent potential" that lies dormant in the church and can be reactivated by both internal as well as external circumstances. The factors, or elements, that make up Apostolic Genius are; Jesus is Lord, Disciple-making, Missional-Incarnational Impulse, Apostolic Environment, Organic Systems, and Communitas.

Buckets of Hope (Haiti)

"Buckets of Hope" - Feeding the People of Haiti one Family at a Time

The “Buckets of Hope” ministry is just one means by which Baptists can fulfill the mandate of Jesus Christ to feed the hungry in the name of Jesus. As we are reminded in Matthew 25:40, Jesus tells us, "And the King shall answer and say unto them, 'Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.'" (KJV)

A “Bucket of Hope” consists of a plastic five-gallon bucket packed with selected foodstuffs. For approximately $30 anyone can purchase the materials and assemble a "Bucket of Hope." The food contained in a single bucket will feed a Haitian family for a week. You are also requested to include a $10 cash contribution, placed in an envelope and attached to the lid of the bucket, to offset the cost of transporting the relief buckets to Haiti.
Buckets must be packed with a specific list of food items inside. Please follow the detailed instructions carefully. This will ensure that every bucket quickly passes through customs and into the hands of the Haitian people.

As you all know this year has been tough for many people. Eagle Harbor has done fairly well throughout these trying times. Our visibility and exposure is up, our program is recognized as the best in the region and our children are making great strides. Just this week one of our sixteen year olds turned down adoption to stay at Eagle Harbor.

Our budget for this year was roughly $750,000 with little or no room for mistakes. We are entering November and we are down in donations and income $13,000 or 1.8 percent. Not a bad number in today's economy. It would not be such a big deal, but we are coming out of a month that has 3 pay periods for our staff of eleven and soon to enter the holiday season. We cannot afford for the staff of Eagle Harbor to go without compensation or for them to lose faith in the very entity that speaks of faith to our children daily.

I am writing you this email in hopes you will respond to the need at hand. At this time all of our bills are paid, we just need to make up the $13,000 to assure that the staff are taken care of and that future needs are meet. Please consider making a contribution to Eagle Harbor. When broken down, we together can see this need erased. By donating as little as $25, $50, or $100, and if you can $1000, $2000 and $5000 amounts, we can speak of God's faithfulness.

The 8^th Annual Convoy of Hope is rolling into Charleston October 10^th.

This outreach will be held Saturday, October 10, beginning at 9 a.m. in the parking lots at the end of Cosgrove Avenue near the old Navy Base. Volunteers are requested to report to the site by 7am for briefing, placement and final setup.

It is not too late to get involved in this year’s Convoy of Hope.

You can help out with this important event in the following ways:

Hope-In-Action hygiene kits that will be given out at the Convoy outreach to the homeless. The kits can be brought to the Volunteer Rally on Oct. 9^th at Faith Assembly or to Hope Assembly by Oct. 9th. http://charlestonconvoy.com/HopeInAction.html.

An Assessment Team departed for Douglasville, GA today to help with the recovery effort. We are still anticipating a mudout/tearout response.

An International Search and Rescue medical team departs on Oct. 1 to assist Hungarian Baptist Aid in the Philippines.

We have made an offer to the Hawaii-Pacific Baptist Convention to assist with tsunami damage in American-Samoa.

Please pray for those affected and those who respond. Pray that people will “see our good deeds and praise our Father in heaven.”(Mt. 5:16).

Hope for the hopeless...

On Saturday, Oct 10th, the Greater Charleston Convoy of Hopewill be rolling into town.

The 7^th annual Convoy of Hope event promises to be one of Charleston’s largest community outreach events to extend help to those in need in the city's history. Local churches, civic organizations, businesses, medical organizations are partnering together to serve our community. Join with us through volunteering and financial help and become a tangible expression of hope to your commun ity.

WHAT: COMMUNITY OUTREACH

A carnival-like event that includes free distribution of 1,000's of bags of food to provide meals to feed needy people throughout the Greater Charleston area. Free grocery distribution begins with free refreshments, live entertainment, children’s carnival area, medical services, job placement, haircuts, and more. The activities will continue, rain or shine, until all the food has been distributed. No identification is needed.

WHO:

Area churches, businesses, and community agencies in the Greater Charleston area; Without Walls Ministry; and Convoy of Hope, based in Springfield, Missouri, are donating time and resources to host this community outreach. This all-volunteer outreach includes a 1000+ volunteers who will be on hand to help unload the Convoy of Hope truck, distribute food, and facilitate all outreach programs.

WHY:

Convoy of Hope local outreaches are united acts of compassion designed to meet the basic physical and spiritual needs of community residents. Convoy of Hope is a non-profit organization that provides resources to organizations and churches to meet physical and spiritual needs for the purpose of making the community a better place.

WHEN: Saturday October 10th

Lyme Disease movie "Under our skin"

Governor Sanford, Mayor Keith Summey and Mayor Joe Riley have all made proclamations that May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month. This is a topic that is all too familiar to our family as you will see from the article that follows.

Because of this we will be showing the Lyme Disease Documentary, “Under Our Skin”, on Saturday, May 23, at 6:00, at Goose Creek First Baptist Church. One of our country’s, and very possibly the world’s, leading Lyme Disease Specialists, Dr. Joseph Jemsek, will be available for questions immediately after the showing.

Maybe you know someone that has an illness that doctors just can’t find an answer for. They have all the symptoms of a disease or a few diseases, but all tests turn up negative. They don’t have an explanation as to why they feel bad all the time or can’t find words or names. Please encourage them to come see this film. We have included a poster and a bulletin insert as well. You will be amazed at the reality of Lyme Disease and the corruption behind the inability to get care.

In addition , you and your spouse are invited to a BBQ in the church fellowship hall at 4:00 prior to the showing. We hope you will join us in educating the people in our congregation.

My name is Jill Frey and I am the mother of a seven year old boy named Zachary. Zachary was born with a very severe heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). I was 24 weeks pregnant when we found out through a routine ultra sound.

At the time we were diagnosed we didn't know much about Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs) nor that they were the number one birth defect affecting one out of every 100 babies born each year. As with countless others who have been in our situation, we were encouraged to terminate the pregnancy by the medical professionals who diagnosed us. Of course, they told us, there is always the surgical option, but they stressed we wouldn't know what his life expectancy would be or what type of quality of life he would have. Because abortion is against our faith, we were left feeling hopeless.

Until we did our research on the Internet and learned there were many children thriving with CHDs just like our son. It was these support organizations that gave us the hope that our son would have a chance. The people I met online were there for me when I needed them most. That's why when we moved to South Carolina, and I learned of the group Palmetto Hearts, I immediately joined ready and willing to offer hope and support to other families. Palmetto Hearts mission is that no family should feel alone on this journey of having or loving someone with a Congenital Heart Defect or Disease. Through organizing social activities and providing information resources, Palmetto Hearts hopes to build a community for CHD families across South Carolina.

When it was brought to my attention that there was no contact person for the Lowcountry, I didn't hesitate to take on the responsibility. Since I am relatively new to South Carolina, I was hoping that by introducing myself to you and explaining a little about Palmetto Hearts, you would have information to give to any of your congregation who may be dealing with a CHD or expecting a child with a CHD. HELP WITH BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPLIES: Many families are struggling right now just to make ends meet. Those with children may have gotten their kids ready for school back in the summer, but now that a couple of months have passed those supplies are running low and probably need to be replaced. Many teachers are paid embarrassing wages and the poor economy makes their situation worse. What few people know is that they often dip into their own finances to help the families with school supplies by offering pens, pencils, paper and other needs free of charge. Consider adopting a local classroom in your community for the year. If that is too big for you start out small. Consider buying a inexpensive school backpack (usually around $7.00, but check with your local district to make sure what the rules are—some schools require clear back packs for safety) and then go to the store and fill that pack up with pens, pencils, markers, glue, folders, notebooks and paper. Disaster Relief: NC Baptists in Baytown, TX

All three of our (NC Baptist) large feeding units will be set up in Baytown, Texas to assist with Hurricane Ike disaster relief efforts there. The combined capacity of all three feeding units is 70,000+ meals per day. Teams and equipment are traveling today and plan to start serving meals tomorrow (Tuesday). Lots of our other equipment and volunteers are also traveling to Baytown, Texas including tanker units, generator units, shower units, laundry units, etc. We anticipate sending recovery volunteers at a later time. We will update you when we are ready to send recovery volunteers and teams.

Please pray for the victims of Hurricane Ike and for the volunteer as they seek to serve them. Pray for safety for the volunteers as they travel and as they work.

You all came up with several good ideas for projects we could pursue as part of Mission: Charleston. Here is a list. I hope those who read this will contribute their ideas as well under the comments. You can also comment on an idea already submitted. If you know contact info, names, etc. that would be great.

* Backyard Bible clubs/local VBS in a park; possible neighborhoods include Brownsville and Robin Wind.

* Inner city ministry through Hope Assembly of God down on Kings St. in Chas. This happens every Sat. if we want to go and see what happens.

* Migrants/Hispanic ministry in the area. Take free food, clothes, etc. to a trailer park where need is obvious.

* Reach out to our future neighbors near our property up on Hwy 78 & Wagon Trail Rd.

* Partner with the DREAM Center in N. Chas. (A ministry of Seacoast Church)

* Construction/Reconstruction/Painting. Charleston Outreach may have leads on this as would Habitat for Humanity.

* Palmetto House for homeless people.

* Check with Matt Kuhn at Summerville Baptist on projects they worked for their mini-World Changers in March.

* Opportunities at the Dorchester County Sr. Center

* Check with the principle at Alston Middle School for possible families we could help.

Hi Everyone,

What an exciting day! We signed the lease, got the keys, turned on all the utilities, moved office furniture in, whew! Very, very exciting.

PLEASE come Saturday about 10:00 a.m. for our work day. We'll paint, do yardwork and CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN!

We've had a lot of things donated but are still in prayer for monthly financial support. Please pray with me. I know this absolutely MUST be God's vision because it is not possible that this has been accomplished without His doing.

Human Needs Crisis Network

The Human Needs Crisis Network is a new initiative facilitated by Charleston Outreach in partnership with church leaders from around the Tri-County area (Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester), and Trident United Way.

Partnership churches are networking in geographic areas to handle day-to-day basic human need crisis scenarios with the aim of moving individuals and families from that crisis and into stability. Annual training will be provided to enable churches to respond to regular requests for assistance with confidence, consistency, collaboration, and a compassionate vision that goes beyond the symptoms.

The aim of the Human Needs Crisis Network is to create a Tri-county wide safety net for individuals and families in crisis. With a coordinated and planned response the churches of the Tri-county area can help eliminate unnecessary duplication of services and make a lasting difference in people's lives.

Charleston Outreach is a non-profit committed to sharing opportunities for restoring communities through-out the greater Charleston area and beyond. For over 15 years, CO has been in the community restoring business - from free medical and dental clinics, to home weatherization and restoration, work with children and youth, as well as a new Human Needs Crisis Network. CO is determined to mobilize the vast resources of churches across the Tri-County area to live out their life-restoring call.

We are also committed to helping the church as we utilize teams who come to serve with us from around USAmerica. While connecting these teams with the life-restoring work of the church here in Charleston, our hope is to help move these visiting teams into the same vision for their own towns and cities. As a part of this year-round missions effort, Charleston Outreach has pre-packaged adventures for teams in the Spring, and Summer as well as spot projects from August through February. Teams may participate in a wide variety of ongoing ministries, including construction, multi-housing, and prayer-walking. For those with language capabilities, some of these ministries can have Hispanic focus as well.

Whether you are part of a greater Charleston area church that wants to play a role in restoring communities or a team who desires to labor in Charleston to help with this movement, we would love to hear from you!

Everyday in South Carolina there are thousands of people who are hungry. Esther Victory Ministries for Christ is dedicated to helping anyone who needs assistance and is a resident of Summerville.

With the price of eggs up by 24% and flour up by 69% compared to last year, it’s no wonder more people need help. Overall, the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that the cost of food – grocery store bought – will have increased by 6%. It’s the biggest jump in food prices since 1990.

Soaring food and gas prices that are forcing working people to seek help just to feed their families and make ends meet.

Since 2000, South Carolina and the nation have regressed in some key areas affecting children's health, with the most alarming being the child poverty rate.

The number of children nationally living in poverty has increased by 1.2 million to 13.4 million in 2005, and is a reversal of a trend from the 1990s.

South Carolina is the 6th in the nation for percent of population identified as food insecure. Food insecurity is the reality of living with hunger or fear of starvation.

In these tough times, Esther Victory is here to offer hope.

We accept donations of food, including canned food as well as personal care and household items, new school supplies and clothing for our clothing bank. We also accept monetary donations.

4 years in the making, the PEACE Plan created by Pastor Rick Warren is a great strategy for making a real difference in the world today.

The P.E.A.C.E. Plan is a massive, long range effort to mobilize one billion Christians in local churches around the world to copy Jesus' model of ministry. P.E.A.C.E. is an acronym for promote reconciliation, equip servant leaders, assist the poor, care for the sick, and educate the next generation. Coalition members see these actions as Jesus' antidote to five "global giants" that affect billions of people worldwide: spiritual emptiness, self-centered leadership, poverty, pandemic disease, and illiteracy.

How are you already carrying this plan out globally? How about locally?

I'm planning to "Promote reconciliation" and "Educate the next generation" by starting a kids group in my garage for our neighborhood kids. I'm hoping to teach kids who God is and why they can trust Him while reaching out to their parents through their children.

I'm also hoping to take this and apply it to our work in Curacao. What are you doing about the PEACE Plan?

Crisis Ministries Shelter of Charleston

Crisis Ministries provides food, shelter and hope to end homelessness and hunger one person at a time, one family at a time.

Crisis Ministries provides short term emergency housing, meals, primary health care, mental health care, substance abuse counseling, and employment training and placement for homeless men, women and children. We serve over 200 lunches daily at a Soup Kitchen available to anyone in the community who is hungry. For some this is a short stay. Others live at the shelter up to eighteen months while waiting for affordable housing.
